Quase uma década e meia dentro do século 21, e trinta anos depois de ter organizado a exposição e os eventos de Depois do Modernismo (Lisboa, 1983), com Luís Serpa, Michel-Toussaint Alves Pereira, Ricardo Pais, Ribeiro da Fonte e tantos outros, a minha reflexão tem rondado a pergunta que então se fez: “Acabaram ou não as dicotomias felizes?”. “Acabou ou não o moderno e o modernismo?”. É evidente que acabaram! E acabou também o tempo passageiro e superficial do pós-modernismo. Hoje, vivemos já aquilo que, lembrando Lyotard, diria ser uma condição pós-contemporânea. Com sorte, será o princípio de um novo renascimento, cujos contornos, porém, são ainda ténues. Para desenvolver alguma fenomenologia em volta desta intuição, resolvi iniciar um ciclo de exposições, textos e debates sobre esta suposta condição pós-contemporânea, através de alguns artistas e obras que melhor poderão ajudar-me a perceber o que se passa. Miguel Palma é naturalmente a escolha certa para iniciar esta “investigação”. TOYZE é a minha escolha para a segunda exposição desta minha ‘investigação’ sobre o fim do século vinte e o princípio do século vinte e um.

Almost a decade and a half into the 21st century, and thirty years after I organized the After Modernism (Lisbon, 1983) exhibition and events, with Luís Serpa, Michel Toussaint Alves-Pereira, Ricardo Pais, Ribeiro da Fonte and many others, my reflection became about the questions: “Are the happy dichotomies ended or not?”, and “Is modern and modernism over or not?”. It is clearly over! And also the ephemeral time and superficial post-modernism! Today we live in what we would call, remembering Lyotard, a post-modern condition. With luck, it will be the beginning of a new renaissance, whose outlines, however, are still tenuous. To develop some intuition phenomenology around this, I decided to start a series of exhibitions, publications and debates about this supposed post-modern condition, through some artists and works that may help us to understand what is happening. Miguel Palma is naturally the right choice to start this “research”. TOYZE is my second choice for this art ‘investigation’ on late 20th century and the beginning of 21st era.
