Abstract: "Alice do Outro Lado da Passerelle” é terceira exposição do ciclo “Olho por olho, mente por mente”, comissariado por António Cerveira Pinto para os 30 anos da Galeria Luís Serpa. A exposição reúne mais de uma centena de fotografias realizadas nos backstages dos desfiles de moda portuguesa.
Nas palavras do comissário desta segunda exposição individual de João Bacelar, António Cerveira Pinto, escreve:
«Se há manifestação que distinga a cultura moderna e contemporânea, a moda é uma delas. No seu corpo frágil e efémero, nos tecidos que acabam de pousar sobre a pele das modelos, no movimento encadeado das passerelles, a moda chama si o narcisismo, o desenho, o corte, a costura, o imaginário, o erotismo, a sedução, o nervosismo, a excitação e a beleza de uma era inventada para a cidade, para a comunicação e para o olhar, para a liberdade e para a democracia. No feminino, masculino e neutro. Na feminina, masculina e neutra. Na alta costura, no último figurino e no alfaiate que entusiasmou Kierkegaard. No preto-e-branco, no prêt-à-porter e na cor, claramente!
Na antecâmara deste frenesim circular move-se um felino entre a luz e as sombras. É o artista como fotógrafo, o caçador de imagens que se propagam pelas fases da luz como num lago sem fim. É João Bacelar, ou seja, o retratista da dimensão invisível dos modelos antes de desfilar. O artista circula sem censura pelos bastidores da moda, partilhando os momentos e as tensões que antecedem o catwalk, os jogos de linguagem, as formas, cores e movimentos. Alice do outro lado dapasserelle, claramente!»
Abstract: "Alice on the Other Side of the Catwalk" is the third exhibition of "An eye for an eye, a mind for a mind" curated by Antonio Cerveira Pinto within the 30th anniversary of Luís Serpa art gallery. The exhibition brings together more than one hundred photographs taken in the backstage of the Portuguese fashion parades, with particular emphasis on ModaLisboa fashion week.
In the words of Antonio Cerveira Pinto, the Curator of this second one-man show by João Bacelar, "If anything distinguishes modern and contemporary culture, fashion is the one. In its fragile and ephemeral body, in the tissue that had just landed on the skin of models and their chained movement, fashion calls itself for the narcissism, drawing, cutting, sewing, imagery, eroticism, seduction, nervousness, excitement and beauty of an era marked by urban communication, look, freedom and democracy. Where the female, the male and other genres interact day and night. High couture, the last costume and the famous tailor that excited Kierkegaard. In black and white, prêt-à-porter and color, what else?
In this frenzy circular chamber a special cat moves with a camera on his hands. It is the artist, hunter of images that propagate through the phases of light as an endless lake. It is João Bacelar, the intimate reporter of the invisible dimensions before the parade. The artist as photographer moves uncensored around the backstage of fashion travails, sharing those moments and tensions preceding the catwalk, capturing different language games, shapes, colors and movements emanating from those frenzy days and nights. Alice on the other side of the catwalk, definitely!"
JOÃO BACELAR [Lisboa, 1972]
João Bacelar é o fotógrafo oficial de backstage e still life da Moda Lisboa desde 2004. É fotógrafo oficial de backstage do festival Optimus Alive.
Foi responsável de imagem da primeira visita do Dalai Lama a Portugal, tendo desenvolvido todo o design e identidade gráfica dos livros de oração, decoração, objetos e merchandising.
João Bettencourt Bacelar começou a desenhar muito cedo em pranchas de surf e bodyboard. Estudou design no IADE. Cedo a ilustração e a fotografia para publicidade e moda levaram-no à empresa Novo Design (Brandia), tendo montado um atelier com Ricardo Mealha em 1995. Passou ainda nos anos 90 pela Young & Rubicam, BMZ/PARK e em 2000 pela BBDO e depois ainda pela Saatchi e pela Ogilvy & Matter. Foi ainda durante essa década que começou a colecionar os mais de 30 prémios de design e comunicação (vários European Regional Design Awards, Prisma Awards, Eurobest, FIAP, Cannes Festival, Clio Awards, Cresta Awards, The New York Festivals, EMEA, Troféu Diário de Notícias) com trabalhos que realizou para instituições como Portugal Telecom, Sonae, Nissan, Ford, ICEP, Revista Cais, Amnistia Internacional, Sindicato de Jornalistas, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
JOÃO BACELAR [Lisbon, 1972]
João Bettencourt Bacelar began his art life very early, drawing surfboards and boogie boarding. He studied design at Portuguese Institute of Arts and Design (IADE). He makes illustration and photography for advertising and fashion companies and magazines as New Design (Brandia), having set up a design studio with Ricardo Mealha in 1995. During the 90's he worked for Young & Rubicam, BMZ / PARK and in 2000 for BBDO and, later for Saatchi and Ogilvy & Matter. Also, during this decade, he began collecting over 30 design and media awards (European Regional Design Awards, Prism Awards, Eurobest, FIAP, Cannes, Clio Awards Cresta Awards, New York Festivals, EMEA, Trophy Diary News). He has also done projects for Portugal Telecom, Sonae, Nissan, Ford, ICEP, Pier Magazine, Amnesty International, Union of Journalists and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Bacelar was the only Portuguese vídeo maker selected for Ridley Scott’s “Life in a Day”.
ANTÓNIO CERVEIRA PINTO [Macau, 1952]
Artista, escritor e crítico cultural. Dedica-se sobretudo à actividade artística, reflexão, escrita e direcção de projectos multidisciplinares. Fundou e dirige a Aula do Risco, desde 1994. Escreveu até a data mais de 1700 textos de reflexão e crítica. A sua arte tem uma visível marca conceptual. Idealizou, com Carlos Sant’Ana, a extensão de Lisboa para a margem esquerda do Tejo [2005] e uma cidade tecnológica para Montemor-o-Novo [1995]. Concebeu um Museo de Arte y Nuevas Tecnologias na Corunha [1987]. Participou na exposição inaugural de Centro de Arte Museo Reina Sofia, em Madrid [1986]. Participou na XII Bienal de Paris [1982], e está representado nas colecções, do Museu de Serralves e do Museu Berardo.
ANTÓNIO CERVEIRA PINTO [Macau, 1952]
Artist, writer and cultural critic, mainly dedicated to artistic activity and writing, as well as directing multidisciplinary projects. Founder and director of Aula do Risco ('Risk School') since 1994. He has written over 1700 texts. His art has a visible conceptual mark. Created, along with Carlos Sant'Ana, a strategic and urban concept for extending Lisbon centre to river Tejo left bank [2005]. Envisioned a technologic city for Montemor-o-Novo [1995] and the creative concept for the Museo de Arte y Nuevas Tecnologias at the Spanish town of La Coruña (1987). Participated in the opening exhibition of the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid [1986] and in the XII Bienal of Paris [1982]. Is represented in the collections of the Museum of Serralves and Museum Berardo.
