Rui Martins — Feathers Always Make People Attractive é a quinta exposição do ciclo “Olho por olho, mente por mente”, comissariado por António Cerveira Pinto para os 30 anos da Galeria Luís Serpa. A exposição compõe-se de três segmentos: 1) capturas de ecrã ampliadas 2) uma sequência de vídeos em loop 3) uma página do Tumblr dedicada a este projeto em desenvolvimento.
Rui Martins é um autor nato de imagens e animação 3D, e um diretor de vídeo. O projeto escolhido deriva de uma tendência difusa que tem vindo a consolidar-se sob a designação Glitch Art, desde 2010 (ex: GLI.TC/H). Glitch refere-se a um evento inesperado e perturbador da expetativa tecnológica, por exemplo, quando o fluxo de voz se engasga numa conversa Skype, ou o braço de um gira-discos desliza inopinadamente produzindo um arranhão sonoro, ou quando as imagens digitais de uma televisão ou do monitor de um computador, ipad, smarphone, etc., saltam, se sobrepõem, ou estupidamente congelam. Ao contrário do ruído, que tende a ser uma ocorrência contínua, ou uma interferência entre dois acontecimentos ou padrões, o glitch é um acidente entre a informação e o suporte/veículo/transmissor da mesma, é, por assim dizer, uma acidente da representação. O que a Glitch Art, e Rui Martins, fazem é explorar este imenso universo, colecionar acidentes, provocar acidentes (bending), classificar estes acidentes, e finalmente recriar narrativas e objetos de arte aumentada através de procedimentos tipicamente editoriais, cuja densidade simbólica acompanha a nossa própria crescente imersão tecnológica. Esta é seguramente a primeira apresentação em Portugal da mais recente manifestação da já longa tradição iconoclasta oriunda do dadaísmo.

Rui Martins - "Feathers Always Make People Attractive" is the fifth exhibition of "An eye for an eye, a mind for a mind," curated by Antonio Cerveira Pinto for the thirtieth anniversary of Luis Serpa art gallery, in Lisbon. The exhibition consists of three parts: enlarged screenshot prints; a video loop, and a page of Tumblr devoted to this ongoing project.
Rui Martins is a 3D animation artist, and video director. The artwork on display is part of a new widespread trend known by Glitch Art. As GLI.TC / H put it: "A glitch is an unexpected, non- or mis-understood break in a technological flow that for a moment reveals (gives a window into), its system. Though a glitch doesn't have to be digital, it often refers to a digital error or 'bug'. Generally, it can be anything from a skipping CD in a cafe to compression artifacts during a video chat.
And glitch art usually refers to the intentional provocation or appropriation of a glitch by an artist. Glitch artists investigate and collect glitches to make work in many mediums (sound, web, images, video, realtime audio video performances, installations, texts, videogames, artware or software art, etc) for many different reasons (to explore the aesthetic and conceptual potential of glitches, to examine the politics embedded in technological systems, to create digital psychedelic and/or synesthetic experiences, to practice hacktivism, to explore themes of failure, chance, memory, nostalgia, entropy, etc). What Glitch Art and Rui Martins do is to explore this huge techno world, in order to collect accidents, design accidents (bending), classify these accidents, and finally recreate narratives and art objects typically expanded through editing procedures, whose symbolic density accompanies our own growing technological immersion. This is surely the first show in Portugal of the latest manifestation of the longstanding tradition of iconoclastic Dadaism.
